Embraced Playground

Over the last 50 years, the Foundation has awarded many meaningful grants, one of which is a special memorial playground in Jones Park. Dedicated on October 15, 2015, and designed expressly for youngsters aged one to five, the playground exists thanks to Fort Atkinson resident Laura Becker and the Embraced organization she founded.

Hoping to create a local focal point in support of those families, like hers, who had experienced pregnancy or infant loss, Laura applied to the Community Foundation for a grant of $10,000, promising to raise another $10,000 on her own. Working with our Fort Atkinson Parks and Recreation, she helped select the location and equipment, and she succeeded both in receiving our challenge grant and raising the matching funds.

On that October night, as part of the evening’s dedication ceremony, a candlelight vigil was held in honor of national Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day.

Laura turned a personal loss into a meaningful playground at Jones Parks that is enjoyed by hundreds of families. She made a difference and pushed us toward A Better Fort Atkinson.
