Organizations interested in submitting a grant application to the Fort Atkinson Community Foundation are reminded of the upcoming March 15th deadline for requests to be considered at the Foundation’s April 2019 Board of Directors meeting. Should this deadline be missed, the next opportunity to submit an application will be by June 15th to be considered at the Board’s July 2019 meeting. The Fort Atkinson Community Foundation helps to fund projects focused on improving the general quality of life in Fort Atkinson. Grants are generally made only to nonprofit organizations exempt from federal taxation and not to individuals. The Fort Atkinson Community Foundation reminds the public that applications for 34 of its 38 competitive scholarship programs for the 2019-20 academic year are due by 10 p.m. on Friday, February 15, 2019. Current graduating seniors at Fort Atkinson High school, former graduates, and residents of Fort Atkinson may all be eligible, depending upon the criteria attached to each scholarship. To view all the scholarships offered by the Community Foundation and to see the criteria for each one, visit the foundation’s website at www.fortfoundation.org. Continuing students should visit the Foundation’s website, www.fortfoundation.org, and follow the link to the scholarship pages. Here they can search for scholarships based on whether they are currently an undergraduate or graduate student. There are also scholarships for continuing vocational or technical school students. The Fort Atkinson Community Foundation is pleased to announce that three AAUW scholarships, with awards totaling over $20,000 for the 2019-20 school year, are now available to women who either reside in the Fort Atkinson School District, are employed in Fort Atkinson, or are a graduate of Fort Atkinson High School. These three AAUW scholarships – the Second Chance, the Jane Shaw Knox Adopt-a-Student Scholarship, and the Jane Shaw Knox Graduate scholarships – work to provide financial assistance to women at every level of post-secondary education. The Fort Atkinson Community Foundation is pleased to announce that Sue Johnson has been appointed to serve a five-year term on the organization’s Board of Directors. She was nominated by the Fort Atkinson City Council and will be replacing Mary Behling who has completed her term and who will spend 2019 serving the board as past chairman. “Sue will be a valuable addition to this board,” noted 2018 Foundation Chairman Mary Behling. “Her extensive involvement in the community, her knowledge of local issues, and her financial expertise will serve the Foundation well.” Johnson has been a member of the Fort Atkinson community since her family moved here in 1978. The Nsibirwa family of Fort Atkinson recently made two substantial gifts to the Fort Atkinson Community Foundation in memory of their daughter, Angelina Nsibirwa. With the first gift, the family opened a designated fund to benefit the Fort Atkinson Food Pantry. This new fund is an endowed, invested fund that will provide long-term, annual financial support to the Fort Atkinson Food Pantry. A second gift was made to the Foundation’s new AAUW Grants for Gals Acorn Fund, a gift that pushed this acorn fund past the $15,000 threshold, allowing it to become a regular, active scholarship fund. Thanks to the Nsibirwas, this fund will soon be making grants to local girls and women to help them take advantage of educational, cultural, leadership or professional advancement opportunities.
