2018 Karrels AP Computer Science Scholarships Awarded

At the August 16th school board meeting, teacher Dean Johnson and scholarship funder Ed Karrels presented 24 students from Fort Atkinson High School with $1,000 Ed Karrels AP Computer Science Scholarship awards.  All 24 students had met the requirements of the scholarship which consist of taking and passing the yearlong AP Computer Science class and then scoring a score of 3 or higher on the AP Computer Science exam.  Recipients are: Ernest Bos, Logan Bowker, Kate England, Madelynn Evans, Nicole Gjertson, Lillian Gomez, Noah Keating, Riley Koehler, Jesse Kutz, Logan Lehmann, Austin Marquart, Eli McCready, Alyssa Meacham, Margaret Opperman, Garrett Rieger, Mark Riggs, Kassidy Ruud, Colton Schiewe, Abigail Schwab, Corinne Stoutenborough, Derek Vaillancourt, Tyler Vaillancourt, Garvin...

14 Fort students receive Buell Graduate Scholarships

The Fort Atkinson Community Foundation recently awarded Walter and Louise Buell Graduate Scholarships, totaling $17,500, to 14 Fort Atkinson students. These scholarships are possible thanks to Louise Buell who directed that, upon her death, the residue of her estate be given to the Community Foundation with half of that gift to be used for scholarships. Buell Graduate Scholarships are available to residents of Fort Atkinson or graduates of Fort Atkinson High School who are enrolled, or accepted for enrollment, in a graduate program at an accredited college or university, leading to a masters, doctorate, or professional degree. Hundt receives Medical Careers Scholarship

The Fort Atkinson Community Foundation is proud to award a $5,000 Medical Careers Scholarship to Shalane Hundt.  Hundt, a 2011 graduate of Fort Atkinson High School, earned her bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in 2015 and was immediately accepted into Marquette University’s School of Dentistry. This fall, she will begin her final year in the program. Hundt’s desire to pursue a degree in dentistry stems from her experiences job shadowing dentists, witnessing “a certain magic” in dentistry by which dentists were able to restore their patients’ self-esteem and make them feel comfortable again to show off their smile. The Fort Atkinson Community Foundation recently awarded three Ralph and Clara Rutledge Memorial Scholarships, totaling $7,000 to former Fort Atkinson High School graduates Erica Vander Mause, Olivia Nichols and Alexis Kent. Ralph and Clara Rutledge were long-time residents of the Fort Atkinson area. While they didn’t have children of their own, they lived near the old high school on South High Street and maintained an interest in local students. As part of their estate planning, the Rutledges chose to endow a scholarship fund through the Fort Atkinson Community Foundation. The Directors of the Fort Atkinson Community Foundation have awarded a $2,000 Eileen Harrison Education Scholarship to Fort Atkinson agriculture teacher, Shannon Lyon.  A 2000 graduate of Fort Atkinson High School, Lyon earned a bachelor’s degree in agriculture education from the University of Wisconsin–River Falls in 2004. Since 2007, she has been an agriculture teacher at Fort Atkinson High School where she also serves as a FFA advisor. After teaching for over a decade, Lyon recently decided to begin pursuing a master’s degree in career and technical education at the University of Wisconsin–Stout, both to enhance her skills and knowledge base and, ultimately, to help her students find success in career and technical fields. The Fort Atkinson Community Foundation is pleased to award $12,000 in scholarships to four local students from its Jim and Lee Vance Scholarship Fund.    The Vance Scholarship Fund was established at the Foundation in 2015 thanks to a sizable bequest from the estate of the late Lee Vance. Working with her husband, Jim, Lee had planned to establish a fund at the Foundation that would provide scholarships for Fort Atkinson area students.   This is a unique scholarship fund in that, in addition to being residents of the Fort Atkinson area or graduates of Fort Atkinson High School, eligible students also must be either attending one of the colleges the Vances attended or pursing a degree in a field related to the Vances’ fields of study. The Board of Directors of the Fort Atkinson Community Foundation is pleased to announce it has awarded a $3,000 Robert and Judith Knapp Scholarship to John Compas.   Compas, a 2015 graduate of Fort Atkinson High School, will be a senior this year at UW-Madison where he is double majoring in computer science and computer engineering. After graduating in May 2019, Compas hopes to combine the abstract problem-solving of computer science with his engineering training to pursue a career creating original products. He is especially interested in using his training to solve global problems and help communities in impoverished areas. The Fort Atkinson Community Foundation offers a number of scholarships for students who are already attending college. Continuing students should visit the Foundation’s website, www.fortfoundation.org, and follow the link to the scholarship pages. Here they can search for scholarships based on whether they are currently an undergraduate or graduate student. There are also scholarships for continuing vocational or technical school students.
