Science Matters, a new scholarship being offered by the Fort Atkinson Community Foundation, is now available to graduating seniors at Fort Atkinson High School, thanks to the kindness of the McHenry family of Fort Atkinson.  (Pictured here are two of the McHenry kids – Rebecca and Matt) The Science Matters Scholarship Fund was opened at the Community Foundation earlier this year by the McHenry family whose children all received scholarships from the Community Foundation upon graduating from Fort Atkinson High School. The Fort Atkinson Community Foundation is pleased to announce the addition of a new scholarship fund to its portfolio. The David F. Veith Memorial Scholarship Fund, opened in memory of former Fort Atkinson High School teacher David Veith, will be offering a new Veith Performing Arts Scholarship to members of this year’s graduating class at Fort Atkinson High School. The scholarship will be available to graduating seniors who intend to pursue a bachelor’s degree at a four-year college, majoring in a performing arts or related field. Born and raised in Waterloo, Veith’s passion was teaching. He was a gentle and caring man and was devoted to seeking equality for all people. Fort Scholarships, the online scholarship application website sponsored by the Fort Atkinson Community Foundation, is now open and accepting applications for the 2018 scholarship season. Local students will find Fort Scholarships to be a very convenient one-stop shop where they can review the eligibility requirements for a whole host of local scholarships and then apply for those for which they qualify. Housed on the site are all 36 of the competitive scholarships offered by the Fort Atkinson Community Foundation, plus many of those offered through Fort Atkinson High School. The Fort Atkinson Community Foundation recently awarded Walter and Louise Buell Graduate Scholarships, totaling $16,000, to ten Fort Atkinson students. These scholarships are possible thanks to Louise Buell who directed that, upon her death, the residue of her estate be given to the Community Foundation with half of that gift to be used for scholarships. Buell Graduate Scholarships are available to residents of Fort Atkinson or graduates of Fort Atkinson High School who are enrolled, or accepted for enrollment, in a graduate program at an accredited college or university, leading to a masters, doctorate, or professional degree. The Fort Atkinson Community Foundation recently awarded three Ralph and Clara Rutledge Memorial Scholarships, totaling $6,500, to former Fort Atkinson High School graduates Eric Bender, Olivia Hartwick and Myles Gasper. Ralph and Clara Rutledge were long-time residents of the Fort Atkinson area. While they didn’t have children of their own, they lived near the old high school on South High Street and maintained an interest in local students. As part of their estate planning, the Rutledges chose to endow a scholarship fund through the Fort Atkinson Community Foundation. The Directors of the Fort Atkinson Community Foundation have awarded a $2,000 Eileen Harrison Education Scholarship to Devin Congdon. A 2010 graduate of Fort Atkinson High School, Congdon earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 2014. For two years following graduation, she worked in management positions in the fitness industry. However, missing the chance to work with younger children, Congdon made the decision to go back to school to earn her teaching license. She is now enrolled in the middle childhood/early adolescence licensure program at UW-Whitewater with an expected completion date of May 2018. The Fort Atkinson Community Foundation has awarded a $2,500 Robert C. and Judith L. Knapp Scholarship to Myles Gasper. Gasper, a 2011 graduate of Fort Atkinson High School, recently earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering mechanics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In his scholarship application, Gasper noted that the main thing he learned during his undergraduate years as a Badger was that “there is always more to learn.” Therefore, this fall he will be enrolling as a graduate student in the UW’s School of Engineering to pursue a master’s degree in engineering mechanics. Gasper’s particular field of interest is structural engineering, specifically the area of stress analysis.
