All applications for the Community Foundation’s 34 competitive scholarship programs for the 2017-18 academic year are due by 10 p.m. on Wednesday, February 15, 2017.  Current graduating seniors at Fort Atkinson High school, former graduates, and residents of Fort Atkinson may all be eligible, depending upon the criteria attached to each scholarship. To view all the scholarships offered by the Community Foundation and to see the criteria for each one, visit the foundation’s website at www.fortfoundation.org.  After determining their eligibility here, students can then apply by following the links to “Fort Scholarships,” the online scholarship application website sponsored by the Community Foundation. Dr. Michael Bender joins Foundation Board

The Fort Atkinson Community Foundation is pleased to announce that Dr. Michael Bender has been appointed to serve a five-year term on the organization’s Board of Directors.  He was nominated by the Fort Atkinson Area Chamber of Commerce and will be replacing Dean Brown who has completed his term and who will spend 2017 serving the board as past chairman. “We are thrilled to have Mike join the Foundation board” declared Foundation Chairman Chris Rogers.  “His extensive involvement with our community, both through his work and his volunteer experience, will make him an extremely valuable board member.” Bender earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from Marquette University before heading to dental school at the University of Minnesota.  He came to Fort Atkinson in 1987 to join the...

Foundation receives Deets Memorial Gift

The Fort Atkinson Community Foundation gratefully announces receipt of a gift made by the family of Corliss Deets in memory of the former Barrie School principal.  The memorial gift of $1,500 was directed by the family to the Foundation’s Barrie School Scholarship Fund where it will help provide matching funds to allow three Barrie School graduates to receive $1,000 Fred and Helen Rose Inspire-a-Dream scholarships. Deets, who passed away this past November at the age of 86, spent 33 years working in the Fort Atkinson School District, finishing his career as principal at Barrie School, where he is still fondly remembered.  Fourth-grade teacher Bobbie Rawinski reminisced, “Corliss was the principal that hired me eons ago.  He believed that all kids could learn and we needed to figure out...

A scholarship in memory of Hannah Church will be offered to this year’s graduating class at Fort Atkinson High School. Established at the Fort Atkinson Community Foundation from many memorial gifts made by family and friends, this new scholarship fund will offer financial assistance to a graduating senior at Fort Atkinson High School who has been involved in the school’s show choir program. Hannah was a 16-year-old junior at Fort Atkinson High School in October 2016 when her life was cut short by a tragic car accident. At Fort High, Hannah was well-known for her love of show choir where her spirit, leadership, initiative and personality made a positive impact on everyone around her. Fort Tree Fund grant announced

The Community Foundation is happy to announce a grant of $50,000 has been awarded to the City of Fort Atkinson to help the city and the newly-reorganized Beautification Council purchase and plant hundreds of new, large trees in the wake of the emerald ash borer infestation. This is a matching grant so every dollar that is raised from the public will be matched by a Foundation dollar, up to $50,000. To help facilitate the raising of matching funds, a new Fort Tree Fund has been established at the Community Foundation and it is now accepting tax-deductible donations from the public. Giving levels have been established as Sprout, $10 to $99; Sapling, $100 to $299; and Forest, over $300. At their final meeting in 2016, the Board of Directors of the Fort Atkinson Community Foundation said goodbye to retiring director, W. Phil Niemeyer.  Niemeyer was appointed to the Foundation board in 2011 and served a five-year term culminating with his service as chairman in 2015. Throughout 2016, he has continued to attend and contribute to Foundation meetings in an advisory role as past chairman. Fort Scholarships – the local, online scholarship application website sponsored by the Fort Atkinson Community Foundation – is now open and accepting applications for the 2017 scholarship season. Local students will find Fort Scholarships to be a very convenient one-stop shop where they can review the eligibility requirements for a whole host of local scholarships and then apply for those for which they qualify. Housed on the site are all the scholarship offerings of the Fort Atkinson Community Foundation, plus many of those offered through Fort Atkinson High School.
